Qatar Goodwood Festival
< Return To Events
The Qatar Goodwood Festival, otherwise known as “Glorious Goodwood”, the five-day event, which takes place at a spectacular location on the West Sussex Downs – Goodwood House. Home to the his Grace Dukes of Richmond & Lennox for over 300 years, the Goodwood Racecourse forms part of the 12,000-acre West Sussex Goodwood Estate, which is located in the South Downs National Park, near Chichester. Racing may never have been held at Goodwood if it wasn’t for the Third Duke of Richmond, who brought it to the estate in 1802 for officers of the Sussex Militia. Today, the 11th and current Duke, Charles Gordon-Lennox, is the founder of the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival.
The “Glorious Goodwood” is widely regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful racecourses. In my view, also perhaps the best viewing course in Britain: from wherever you are in the stands, from the most exclusive members-only Richmond Enclosure to the cheapest standing area, you have a perfect vantage view as the horses roar down the hill towards the finish line. I must say, its absolutely breathtaking views especially on a sunny day, like the one we had and been blessed by on the very first day of the Racing.
Apart from the spectacular surroundings, ”Glorious Goodwood” bringing its own “non-traditional” racing dress code by allowing the quests to “dress for a garden party” leaving plenty of room for interpretation and imagination. It is a more relaxed affair compared to the formality of Royal Ascot and in my view reflects the whole atmosphere of this glamorous place.
The Goodwood Festival marks the unofficial end of the British social season, traditional highlights of what’s known as “The Season” include the Chelsea Flower Show, racing at Royal Ascot, tennis at Wimbledon, rowing at Henley Regatta and racing at Glorious Goodwood.
Elegant & summery fashion combine with some of the greatest races in the world creates a festival week like no other.
….But…. all the above would never be experienced and discovered if not with the gracious heart of our dearest friend, Amanda Gutkin, who brought us all together for a life-changing and absolutely unforgettable day at the ”Glorious Goodwood”. Experience which only Amanda can put together: Lunch during the race at the Enclosure followed by the Estate historical private tour and meeting His Grace Duke Charles Gordon-Lennox himself over high afternoon tea at his enclosure.
The day could not be scripted any better, it was so enjoyable and passed by so quick that we didn’t realise when it was time to come back home from this fairytale.
Thank you habibti, for an eye-opening experience full of history and horse racing. Thank you for making this day so beautiful, which will never be forgotten.
Absolute Highlight of this British Summer.
